How the Laptops are Tested
When we review a laptop we go to great lengths to study each part of the product and find every possible fault or problem, along with all quality and performance standards. For this we go through several stages as shown below.
1 - Star Ratings.
Build Quality - Here we look at the overall feel of the laptop and how well made it is. This includes the feel of the keys, hinges and latches, click pad, general feel and sturdiness of ports and connections.
Value - We look at what you get for your money, and if your getting the most for your money in terms of build quality, reliability and laptop specification.
Performance - This is where we look at the way the laptop handles different tasks and processes and how well it performs in comparison to its proposed spec.
Features - The features rating gives an insight into how many ports, connections, and general usage features the laptop has.
Overall Rating - The overall rating is a average of all the above elements and can be viewed as the below system shows.
[rating:0.5] - Huge design flaws in all areas. AVOID!
[rating:1]- Huge flaws in many of the key areas. Not worth your money.
[rating:1.5] - Cant be trusted on a daily basis. Use as a backup at best.
[rating:2] - Great for a backup machine, but not much else I’m afraid.
[rating:2.5] - Average. Not an amazing machine, but does the job that’s required.
[rating:3] - Makes a great all-round laptop that wont disappoint.
[rating:3.5] - Some great advantages in addition to a good all-round machine.
[rating:4] - Excels in all areas, great laptop.
[rating:4.5] - Fantastic laptop, you’ll struggle to find anything better.
[rating:5] - The perfect laptop! Nothing could be any better.
User ratings - At the bottom of each individual page we allow anyone visitor to choose a rating from 1 - 5 stars. Each user can only vote once (determined by your computers IP address). This gives you a guide to how other users have found this laptop.
2 - Battery Life.
Battery life testing is done by fully charging the battery and then removing the power cord until the battery is empty. During this process, basic applications and programs are run to simulate normal daily use to get the most accurate results possible.
3 - BAPCo MobileMark.
MobileMark is a program used to determine the battery life performance of the laptop using real life applications. These applications include DVD playback, wireless connectivity, and real word applications. On reboot and completion of the test a score is given to determine the overall mobility performance of the laptop. This is the industry standard for mobile performance.
4 - Futuremark 3DMark.
The 3DMark software is similar to MobileMark but it is used to track the graphics and processor performance of a laptop. This software is run on the laptops to give you an accurate score of how well they perform in comparison to others. This is also industry standard for determining Graphics performance.
